A Giant Awoke!

Orlando became Tahrir Square

by Rick@AveryVoice.com

Sunday in Orlando, a Giant awoke, found it's feet and stood. A fantastic sight met over a hundred pairs of eyes, and ears Sunday.

Activists from across Florida came together, compared notes, discussed tactics, and set our feet firmly on a newly found path carved from darkness and fear.

We found a new road toward a collaboration we'd only dreamed of. We discovered how we might best work together and then we committed to action. Egypt's tremendous first successes stood just off stage and kept stagnant cynicism at bay. We've all had our moments of optimism and pessimism but this was a different moment.

Union leaders, teachers, activists political leaders, amateur and professional political activists all came together, voices from the environmental movement, electoral reformers and family advocates standing together.

Everyone ready to accept his and her responsibility to place another paving stone on the the road ahead. We were no longer waiting in the wings, hoping for access to the levers of power, this was a foretaste of a different dish.

We arose and walked, awaiting no authority's blessing. Deciding for ourselves that we Progressives would make our own way across a landscape darkened by fear, greed and mendacity.

This new road would be built not by intrigues and lobbyists but by open-hearted pragmatic progressives and our path will be lit by our wisdom and humanity. We stand strong because as we were reminded in the closing benediction we stand on the humane side of the future.

We may not have a voice in corporate media, we may not have the benediction of bankers or wall street, but we will with our joint efforts win the true thanks of the least of the sisters and  brothers among us.

Those who stood with us those brief hours, knew the sweetness and brotherhood of Tahrir Square.

Stirring speeches were offered
to remember those who suffer

Amy addressed some of the Environmental Legislation we are faced with from a loosening of the river and lake pollution standards to the suit opposing the EPA's enforcement of Clean Water standards.

Which of course the republican legislature is opposing in Court, spending tax payer money to sue to keep Florida Waters dirty.

Amy also discussed the next Hands across the Sand initiative. We all sign our copies of the Amendment petition during the session. Lisa Walker offered to build an Online PDF which can be completed online.

Later that day, Jeanne Baker former President of the ACLU of Florida addressed the upper room at Tobacco Road explaining that the ACLU is working to remove some of the more onerous aspects of the current law enforcement and judicial landscape. Mandatory Minimums are the current target du jour. She rallied those assembled, telling them if they believe in the values of Medical Marijuana and Decriminalization - they need to become active supporters of organizations working to improve the situation.
